Ayurvedic Home Remedies For Ascites

Accumulation of fluid in the (peritoneum of) abdomen is called Jalodara.


Signs and Symptoms

Enlargement in the size of abdomen, eversion of umbilicus, fullness of the flanks, presence of fluid thrill, shifting dullness on percussion, loss of appetite, weakness, thirst, pain in abdomen are the main signs and symptoms of Jalodara.

Treatment

Salt restricted diet should be given till the disappearance of fluid from the abdomen.

Single Drugs

1. Fluid obtained from the fruit of Nārikela (coconut) is to be given repeatedly as much as patient can take. 

2. Fresh juice (Svarasa) obtained from the root of Punarnavā (pigweed) – 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken twice a day. 

3. Powdered fruit of Pippalī (long pepper) – 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. milk or honey sufficient to make a paste, twice a day.

Simple Preparations

1. Decoction prepared from the root of Punarnavā (pigweed) – 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken with 2 g. powdered root of Punarnavā (pigweed) and 3 g. powder of Triphalā, twice a day. 

2. Śilājatu – 1 g. is to be taken with 3 g. powder of Triphalā twice a day. 

3. Powdered root of Pippalī (long pepper) – 1 to 3 g. is to be taken with Punarnavāṣṭaka Kvātha – 14 to 28 ml. twice a day. 

4. Triphalā and Trikaṭu Siddha Kṣīra – 100 ml. is to be taken twice a day. 

5. Take root bark of Trivṛta (Indian turpeth) – 2 parts, fruit of Pippalī (long pepper) – 2 parts and fruit rind of Harītakī (chebulic myrobalan) – 5 parts, and make the powder. Its 6 to 12 g. is to be taken with 12 g. Guḍa (jaggery) and 100 ml. warm water or milk twice a day.

Compound Preparations

1. Śaṭsakāra Cūrṇa: 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 100 ml. warm water twice a day. 

2. Pippalī-Vardhamāna Yoga: to be taken as directed by the physician. 

3. Ārogya-Vardhinī Vaṭī: 1 g., to be taken with warm water once at bet time.
Pathya

Patient of Udara Roga may be kept on restricted diet for few days. Milk diet gives very encouraging results. 

Śāli variety of rice, Mudga (phaseolus bean), Kulattha (dolichos bean), Yava (barley); goat’s milk, Uṣṭra Dugdha (she camel’s milk), cow’s milk, Takra (butter milk); Ārdraka (ginger), bulb of Rasona (garlic), fruit of Devadālī, leaf and fruit of Paṭola (a variety of small cucumber), leaf of Śigru (horse-radish) root of Punarnavā (pigweed), Tāmbūla (betel leaf) and fruit of Kadalī (banana) are the useful articles of diet for the patients of Udara Roga.

Apathya

Guru and Abhiṣyandi articles of diet are harmful for the patients of Udara Roga. Sleeping in the day, exercise, walking and excessive intake of water should be avoided. Salt should not be given to the patient suffering from Jalodara.
